Radio reaches the biggest audience

Getting on air without spending a dime on advertising, is easy to get on and reaches the biggest audience — of all media. You do not have to dress up and nowadays you don’t even need to go to the radio station as most interviews are done by phone or virtually.

What to do:

1. The best way to get booked on big radio shows is by calling them. They want to hear what you sound like. If someone else like your agent is calling, make sure they have sound clips of you, or your website has those for them to listen to.

2. Have a Pitch Script ready for when you or your agent calls. This is a 30 to 60 seconds pitch. If you are doing it on your own, record yourself and listen to it, make changes until you find it perfect; practice many times before calling the radio station so that it sounds clear and sound. Include in your pitch what you will bring to the show of value, not your story, but what are the 5 topics you will talk about, then give them a list of 10 questions you are to answer that show experience on your topics.

3. Best showtimes are early mornings and late afternoons when people are commuting to and from work.

4. Send a follow-up email right after you speak with the producer with a link to your website and media handles, remember to add the link to the video or sound recordings.

5. Prepare for the Interview. Listen to the show before your interview to get an idea of how the flow goes and what the host and the show are like. Offer freebies to the producer and get the emergency line (Hotline in case something happens the day of the show).

6. Send Thank you letters after your interview.

7. Get an endorsement: Ask the producer to send you a letter on the station’s letterhead saying how great a guest you were to include the comments from the audience.

What NOT to do:

· Send a series of emails, they probably won’t open them.

· Send a long follow-up email telling your story, they do not have time to read it, and you will not get booked.

· Call the radio station without being prepared with your pitch.

· Offer more than you can give.

· Provide your website or any link if is not fully functional or if it is under design stages (they will immediately toss your request).

· Assume your interviewer is knowledgeable about you or your topics.

· Avoid using mobile phone time is limited and sharp, they might not be able to give your interview later if you get disconnected.
